Sometimes you just need a little something sweet, you know? That’s why this week’s snack suggestion includes the mighty medjool date – their sticky, caramelly sweetness is sure to satisfy an afternoon sugar craving. And while dates are packed with naturally occurring sugars (glucose and fructose), they are also an excellent source of dietary fiber (about 7g per 100g serving), and dates are especially rich in soluble fiber, which is the kind that helps maintain healthy blood cholesterol and stabilize blood sugar levels. They’re also rich in antioxidant polyphenols, dietary fiber, potassium, copper, and manganese.
Pairing the dates with a small handful of almonds (don’t forget what a portion of nuts looks like!) is a great combination. The almonds bring healthy fats and a bit of protein to the table, which helps to satiate us, and moderates the passage of sugar through our digestive systems and into the bloodstream. If you like to play with your food, you could even stuff the almonds into the dates, creating sweet, caramelly, nutty, crunchy bites.
