stockholm spring // the muffin mythThe light is coming back in leaps and bounds. This is one of our favourite spots in the city with such spectacular views. Now that things are warming up we’ll be heading there more and more. Horray for spring!

I didn’t manage to get a recipe posted this week, unfortunately. I’ve got a half written post in my draft folder, and a way less than half written thesis. I’ll be back with a recipe very soon, but in the mean time there are some really good links in this week’s roundup. Enjoy!

MM_Web_Icon_FINAL1. A new study out of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden (where I’m doing my MSc in Nutrition) suggests that sweetened beverage consumption is linked to the risk of strokes, and it could be dose related.

We’re eating down the freezer at the moment. The last of a batch of this red lentil and brown rice soup is for dinner, and whole wheat chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

    But surely you can agree that a raw/organic evaporated cane juice might be a ‘best choice’ sugar. As per our discussions there is likely no magic sugar that is delicious, calorie free and not potentially damaging to the body. Not to mention that for most people living completely sugar free isnt really realistic or a choice we want to make. So then all we are left with is to pick the least refined and most ‘natural’ sugar out there, calories and blood sugar spike and all.

    Hi Katie. A couple of pieces jump out at me this week from your post; the sugar cane juice piece is really interesting. My grandfather used to run a sugar cane farm in kenya and many of my relatives and friends relish the juice. My dad keeps saying how its still sugar…

    Great news on the legumes! My brother, although just 31 and slim and fit, works to manage his cholesterol levels. He’s not vegetarian and I am. Going to share this piece with him! X

      It is sugar indeed. But the evaporated cane juice would be much more concentrated and essentially equal to table sugar, which is why the label is so misleading. And cholesterol doesn’t discriminate based on side – get him on legumes!

    Whoa!!! The supertaster article blew my mind!!! As a food blogger, I feel like this is shameful to admit but….I think I’m a non-taster! I’ve never been able to notice the aftertaste from using stevia in baking and Erik can often pick out flavors in a recipe that I would never be able to. Sometimes I’ll make a dish and try to sneak something past him (kale) and he’ll totally catch it! He also hates kale and I now have a neutral-positive relationship towards the taste. Ugh! This is so fascinating! I want to go dye my tongue right now to see if I’m right!
